BIO

"A move from Singapore to Canada, with her high school years spent on Canada’s west coast in Vancouver, allowed this artistic individual to familiarize herself with not only hip hop music, but also the culture that stood behind this still marginalized genre.

The year 1996 marked an educational step forward, departing from Van City to Toronto to attend U of T in what was first an aim for a Law degree, but soon switched gears towards the more art oriented architecture program. Becoming a fan of the burgeoning Toronto hip hop scene, she attended many local showcases and events, as well as dabbling in a little b-girl
breaker action. Favourite artists fell among the likes of Company Flow, Black Star and Lootpack, while also having a strong appreciation for jazz greats like Miles and Coltrane, as well as the dub influenced Jackie Mittoo.

The year 2001 marked an artistic step forward, as a brand new artist was born to the stage at TheCyberKrib.com's "I Still Love H.E.R." all-female urban showcase, opening for Bay Area emcee Mystic. Masia One hit the stage with much curiosity in the crowd, and exited with applause and admiration."

NEWS

What's going on everyone!

Hope this finds you in good spirits.  Jesse (thecyberkrib.com) and I continue on with the monthly series at the El Mocambo, this time upstairs and I'm very excited for the line up!  This time M1 Group's fingers are sore from yarning and beading 5000 bookmarks for y'all! (if you don't know what I'm talking about - you need to go pick up a free bookmark / flyer!)

The overall theme of M1 Academy is to offer a multi-disciplinary showcase of music, art, and dance with an overall hip hop basis, incorporating sights and sounds that are less your mainstream format and more a representation of cutting edge arts and culture which has been able to flourish in cities like Toronto. With an abundance of new developing artists in the grassroots community in Toronto, across Canada, and throughout North America, we plan to offer an evening where people can witness this wealth of talent firsthand.

REVIEW BY LYW

From the Outposts of Hip Hop:  MasiaOne “Create something from nothing”

What is Hip Hop today?  Something floating between Will Smith – Bling Bling – and bang, bang, you dead?  Where does MasiaOne’s new CD, named after an Ontario suburb, Mississauga, fit into this equation?

In two years, this lady has launched her own independent Hip Hop career and company with nothing but love for the music and an Honours BA in architecture.  Why do we want to listen to an architecture major?  Is she going to teach this underground industry, gone mainstream, something about building a solid foundation?
