Hands on Deck  -  Using Turntables to Articulate His Own Post-9/11 Catharsis, Rob Swift Drops a Bomb With Wargames

Published in the January 2006 issue of DJ Times Magazine, Volume 19 - Number 1, by David Cross

Jackson Heights, N.Y. – In an increasingly image-conscious hip-hop world, Rob Swift is an oddity. He makes his living not as a rapper, but as a turntable manipulator, someone who has honed his craft to an art form—an ace turntablist. Though he cultivated a superhero-like DJ identity with his previous crew, the X-Ecutioners, the Queens, N.Y.-based DJ is incredibly down to earth. He switches from technical discussions on DJ gear to unabashed discourses about his hopes, his fears, and his creative struggles, all without missing a beat. In short, there is no separating the DJ identity of Rob Swift from the man himself.  [click the link for more]

I’m the DJ – Numark’s iDJ Mixer by Julie Salickram c/o applematters.com

The iPod now has a nightlife.

Numark announced the first mixing console made for the iPod, the Numark iDJ Mixer in July 2005. The piece began shipping December 2005, just in time for the Dj on your holiday shopping list. While the concept is remarkable and takes the iPod into a whole new realm, the piece is not necessarily so revolutionary in the DJ World. [click the link for more]

History

History Of The DJ c/o Yahoo! Music by Michael Frick

Is There A DJ In The House?
During the first half of this century, not even the most attuned psychic could have foreseen the cultural impact that the vinyl shaman known as the DJ would have on today's modern pop music landscape; but now, artists as diverse as Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, the Beastie Boys, Beck, Ozomatli and the Chemical Brothers have persisted and helped make the DJ a virtual household word. The history of the DJ-as-artist extends much farther back than the '80s and '70s, however, so let's go back to where it all began...

The Definition & History of Turntablism c/ o Jam2Dis.com

The term "Turntablism" was first coined in 1995 by DJ Babu (Beat Junkies) to describe a form of advanced turntable music stemming from Hip-Hop DJ'ing. As Babu stated in a brief 1996 interview :
"My definition of a Turntablist is a person who uses the turntables not to play music, but to manipulate sound and create music." (Interview with Christo Macias, Palo Alto, CA, May 1996.) [click the link for more]

History of DMC DJ Championships

DMC’s World DJ Championships has grown through the years and the formats of the competitions have developed along with the demands. Originally meant to be a DJ mixing battle, DJ Cheese in 1986, introduced scratching in his routine, changing the course of the DMC battles forever. Since that time, the prestigious DMC World Champion title has been the most sought after by aspiring DJs / turntablists worldwide! [click the link for more]

Harmonic Mixing: The 4th Dimension The History of DJ Mixing c/o Harmonic-mixing.com

From Human Jukebox to DJ Artist:

Everything evolves or dies. Some art forms, such as painting, are minimally influenced by the advance of technology. Others, such as the production of home theater experiences, are dependent on technological advances. Some technological advances allow art forms to acquire entirely new dimensions, which are independent variables.

THE ART AND HISTORY OF DJ-MIXING by Alex Cosper c/o Tangent Sunset

The art of DJ-mixing has climbed to the top of the mythical pyramid in certain scenes. For many people, it's a subliminal art that carries a message of nonstop dancing. Different sources credit different DJs as leaders in the field. The story of how DJs started mixing records for clubs is actually not so much about which DJ deserves the most credit, but about the development of new technology and how it played into the evolution of electronic dance music.

Off the Hook

Before Off the Hook it would have been impossible to think that so many quality acts would roll through the Midlands and play to so many up for it party attenders, but this was the case and the acts kept coming to town…

Off the Hook soon grew and its reputation took off and it has become a nationally recognized name for putting on quality events – this had led to OTH putting on events all round the country from Nottingham to Plymouth.

The night’s success also coincided with the resurgence in the popularity in Hip Hop and funk music both locally and nationally and Off the Hook provided a great platform for these local aspiring performers to get their shine on. It will never take all the credit but Off the Hook cannot help to feel it played a part in the fact that many workshops for wanna be DJ’s, rhymers and breakers are all very well attended in the city today.

Like a lot of promoters out there, selfishly the lads wanted a platform that they could DJ on as much as they wanted to provide the locals with some where to do to the electric slide on a Friday night. The DJ sets of the residents themselves alongside those who soon joined board – Hudson, Beatmaster and the multi tasking host with the most BFG helped make Off the Hook what it is.

Nowadays Off the Hook isn’t running as a monthly event in Derby, the crew are now scattered across the country but the name lives on with one off events from time to time and guest DJ spots where ever they get the call.

The mix CDs keep coming with the lads continuing to put out a solid output to a continuing critical acclaim.

DJ Times

DJ Times is considered the "bible of the industry" for the professional DJ. Every month, more mobile and club DJs turn to DJ Times than any other industry publication, making it their primary source for products, technologies, news and information.  Because DJ is a continually forming entity, the publication which reports on the trends of the industry must also help define and shape those trends.  DJ Times is precisely the magazine.
