How much class time do you devote to developing the perfect technique, the
perfect posture or the perfect turn out? Bob Fosse did not have the
wonderful 'technique' that many of us believe is necessary to become a
professional dancer. He had several bad habits, often standing hunched over
and he was even pigeon toed (turned in). In addition, he had poor
flexibility. Sounds like a ballet teacher's nightmare doesn't it? Yet, none
of these would hold him back from a successful career. [click

The age appropriateness issue is a hot topic in the world of dance
education. You cannot find a more heated debate between dancers, teachers,
and parents. There are two major issues here, one is technique and the other
is suggestiveness. [click the link for more]
In the documentary,
African Dance: Sand,
Drum, and Shostakovich,
choreographer Zab Maboungou, says that she always has to "negotiate the
space" when she dances, implying that it is naive of us to think that
there are many places on this earth that do not carry some echoes of our
past, culture and heritage. She negotiates the space in order to give
this past a present meaning.
In the
film, Maboungou is quoted thus, "It is never just there, just like that
for me. It is a space that is inhabited; it is a space that is alive and
I have to negotiate. I`m not just coming in to fill it up. There are
things already there." [click the link for

I am a composer of rhythmic, keyboard-based,
electronic music, composed primarily with modern dance,
a film soundtrack or installation in mind, which is how
my first pieces came about.
The music is full of rhythms which are combined and
contrasted and generally used as building blocks, hence
the name, but there's also a strong element of harmony.
The music can be described as minimal, ambient,
electronica, contemporary, pop... with an eclectic range
of influences including Steve Reich, Graham Fitkin,
Depeche Mode, Philip Glass and Orbital.

DANCE
IN AMERICA presents "Free To Dance" a three-part documentary
that chronicles the crucial role that African-American choreographers and
dancers have played in the development of modern dance as an American art
form. Tracing this phenomenon against the backdrop of America's social,
political, and cultural landscape, the series captures the struggle for
artistic freedom and spotlights the genius created by cultural synergy.
"Without the African contribution, we would not have had American
dance as we know it," says author Katrina Hazzard Donald. "Free
To Dance" is a co-production of the American Dance Festival (ADF) and
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in association with
Thirteen/WNET New York. Madison Davis Lacy is the series producer and
director, and Charles L. and Stephanie Reinhart are the executive
producers.
