Didj
"u" Know - Stories
Dance
ceremonies are often called corroborees. Before invasion
in Sydney for instance, all the clan groups (that’s
family groups) used to gather for corroborees at
Bennelong Point (where the Sydney Opera house is now).
Now, in the 21st century, urban Indigenous people gather
at the Sydney Opera House for both traditional and
contemporary dance performances during the Message
Sticks Indigenous Arts Fesitval every year. Some things
just never change eh? [click the link for more]

 The
Red Earth Annual Celebration
held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma has become a way of recalling the ancestral
traditions, as well as developing a sense of pride in the Native American
culture to new generations. Each dance is rich in symbolism. Attending a pow wow
with a broader understanding of each of the contest dances most certainly will
make the experience more powerful

This page was written for all students of
Southern
pow wows, so that we, the makers of this page, can share what we've been
taught. It has been written with Southern pow wows in the area surrounding and
influenced by the tribes of Oklahoma in mind, and some of the information
contained in this page may not apply to Northern pow wows, but should still be
very useful.
By no means is this the ultimate or definitive
pow wow resource, but it hopes to provide any visitors with a good understanding
of this wonderful celebration.
If there is any information that you would
like to share with the visitors of this page, we will be more than happy to post
it, ranging from additions in etiquette to good resources. Always feel free to
contact
us!

PowWows.com
Pow Wow time is the Native American people's
way of meeting together,
to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old
friendships and make new ones.
This is a time to renew thought of the old ways and to preserve a rich heritage.
There are several different stories of how the
Pow Wow was started. Some believe that the war dance societies of the Ponca and
other Southern Plains tribes were the origin of the Pow Wow.

Aboriginal Dance in the
Northern Territory
Among the most spectacular manifestations of
Aboriginal culture are the ceremonies and dances that are
regularly performed in remote Outback Australia. There are
festivals, like the yearly ones in Barunga in the north of the
Northern Territory and in Yuendumu in the Centre, where
different communities come together for a few days of cultural
exchange, among others.
Traditional dances are also often performed in
the communities just for fun and, for instance, to celebrate the
opening of a new building. But also at funerals in Top End
communities traditional dances are held. Here are a few examples
from the Top End to Central Australia.
