Post Modern Rock: from Jake to the Many - by lyw

This article examines the career of a local rock musician, Jake Chisholm, as an example of our modern rock genre, drawing on opinions across the rock-friendly Internet.

“Rock musicians are musicians who have the balls to be themselves, speak the truth about their experience no matter who’s listening and always play and sing from the place in themselves that only they can get to.”

As much of a cliché as this may sound from the lips of a rock musician, as Jake can attest, it’s not about reviving old sounds or ideas, it’s about making the cliché mean something again.  Jake is an example of exactly where rock music is today.   He stopped trying to take us back to where we were and moved forward on his own. Piero Scaruffi's History of Rock Music

Piero Scaruffi has been writing about popular, avantgarde and classical music for about 30 years, including six books on Rock Music, one on Avantgarde Music and one on New-Age and Electronic Music. He has published articles on dozens of magazines, both in Europe and in the USA. His most recent book on music is "A History Of Rock Music 1951-2000" (2003). [click the link for more]

history.gif (11069 bytes)This web page attempts to explore the roots of rock in such a way as to illuminate the natural progression of musical styles. Too often the study of rock begins with Bill Haley and His Comets and includes scant information about the blues and rhythm records that he, and others, used as a model. A musical genre does not simply appear, it gradually evolves to a point in time when some event-performance, publication, or  recording allows listeners to perceive its unique qualities and apply a label. Reasons to Rock

Reason to Rock HomeReasons to Rock

There are two different ways to look at rock music. The first is to see it as an extension of rock'n roll, which is to say, just another style or genre within the overall form of popular music.

The second perspective, and the one I advocate for in this book, is to view rock as a separate form with its own aesthetic. The relationship I propose between rock and pop music is very similar to the one now widely accepted between film and theater: despite the obvious common elements, what makes a good work of art in the newer form is so different that it is worth addressing separately.

In the case of rock music, I am proposing a number of elements that together define the form. Few if any of these elements are entirely unique to rock. But I will argue that they had a stronger impact on rock music than on other forms, and that it is only in great rock music that all or most of these elements are found to converge.

We play most types of music, so long as it's not manufactured crap i.e boy/girl bands. The only condition to getting played is a good quality recording, you must not be signed to a record label unless it's your own label or it's a true independent label. We support the independent artist world wide.

Post Modern Rock Show

Post Modern Rock college radio show from Portland, OR. Each week, I play the best new independent/alternative music that I can find, and throw in a few classics as well (such as REM, New Order, The Ramones, The Cure, Talking Heads, etc).

I coined the term "Post Modern Rock" about 4 or 5 years ago, to refer to music that is truly alternative, rather than Alternative with a capital "A." After all, what exactly is Nickelback an alternative TO if it's getting played 35 times a day on the radio? "Modern Rock" had been a synonym for "alternative" for years, but since the definition had devolved so badly, I decided that there needed to be a new term for "good music, a cut above the rest, that doesn't get a lot of exposure," so I started calling it "Post Modern Rock," meaning "what comes after Modern Rock."
