Poetry

Mission
"The Open Door will be the policy of this magazine—may the great poet we are looking for never find it shut, or half-shut, against his ample genius! To this end the editors hope to keep free from entangling alliances with any single class or school. They desire to print the best English verse which is being written today, regardless of where, by whom, or under what theory of art it is written. Nor will the magazine promise to limit its editorial comments to one set of opinions."
—Harriet Monroe, 1912

Santa Fe Poetry Broadside

Santa Fe Poetry Broadside... Poets of the Region and Beyond

Santa Fe Poetry Broadside : Poets of the Region and Beyond is an e-zine equivalent of a tiny magazine. In the tradition of the mimeo revolution--we publish whatever we feel like! In most cases this is the poetry of our extended community, here in New Mexico and beyond.

We produce both anthologies and individual chapbooks, often illustrated with paintings and drawings. Our interests also include translation, artists books, and collaborations between poets and painters.

Santa Fe Poetry Broadside is published six times a year. Each issue features twelve poems, either in anthology or the work of a single author. (Occasionally we break this pattern.) We are happy to receive query notes from local poets about possible submissions; and we welcome comments.

Softblow

More than just another international literary site featuring excellent work by established as well as unpublished poets, this online journal hopes to focus all attention back to poetry. Instead of being distracted by crazy formatting, articles, essays, downloadable music or videos, and other website links that serve only to undermine the experience of simply reading the work with a intelligent pleasure, Softblow hopes to better focus the eye back on the poem.

Poetry Groups

Taco Shop Poets

The Taco Shop Poets is a group of artists devoted to creating community empowerment through the arts. We are a group that realizes our community's intangible treasures that can be explored through all of the arts. In our group, we wish to learn from the struggles and successes of all those who came before us, as well as create venues of artistic expression for those who are currently involved in the continuing creation of our community.

The taco shops throughout the border and beyond have given us the cultural flesh of our reality. It is our purpose that these taco shops not be used as a cheap appropriation of our cultura, but rather, act as a place where we can be fed in many ways. We realize that taco shops, in and of themselves, are already inherently flavored places of culture and of celebration, where all walks of life collide for a brief moment. Thus, we wish to affirm this coalescence in an explicit manner, and contribute to it, in the most humble of ways, through our performances.

Leonard Cohen

  • "Suzanne"  poem/song c/o The Leonard Cohen Home Page

The Story of Suzanne c/o  The Leonard Cohen Files

The close relationship between poetry and music scarcely needs to be argued. Both are aural modes which employ rhythm, rime, and pitch as major devices; to these the one adds linguistic meaning, connotation, and various traditional figures, and the other can add, at least in theory, all of these plus harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration techniques. In English the two are closely bound historically. Anglo-Saxon heroic poetry seems certainly to have been read or chanted to a harpist's accompaniment; the verb used in Beowulf for such a performance, the Finn episode, is singan, to sing, and the noun gyd, song. A major source of the lyric tradition in English poetry is the songs of the troubadours.

"Act Too (The Love Of My Life)" (feat. Common)

What?
Hip-Hop y'all, to the top y'all
Hip-Hop check it out
It's like that, and it sounds so nice
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life
We bout to take it to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the check it out
Yo, what? And it sounds so nice
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life
I'm bout to take it to the top, what?
Hip-Hop (hip-hop love)
To the top (to the top) hip-hop, check it out
It's like, word up, and it sounds so nice
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life (of my life)

[Black Thought]
The anticipation arose as time froze
I stared off the stage with my eyes closed and dove
into the deep cosmos
The impact pushed back, the first five rows
But before the raw live shows
I remember I'se a little snot-nosed
Rockin Gazelle, goggles and Izod clothes
Learnin the ropes of ghetto survival
Peepin out the situation I had to slide through
Had to watch my back my front plus my sides too
When it came to gettin mine I ain't tryin, to argue
Sometimes I wouldn'ta made it if it wasn't for you
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life and that's true
When I was handlin the shit I had to do
It was all for you, from the door for you
Speak through you, gettin paper on tour for you
From the start, Thought was down by law for you
Used to hit up every corner store wall for you
We ripped shit, and kept it hardcore for you
I remember late nights, steady rockin the mic
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life

So tell the people like that y'all (that y'all)
And it sounds so nice
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life
We bout to take it to the top..

[Common]
Yo, yo I was speakin, to my guy 'Riq and
How she was desperately seekin to Organize in a Konfusion
Usin, no protection, told H.E.R. on _Resurrection_
Caught in the Hype Williams, and lost H.E.R. direction
Gettin eight/ate in sections where I wouldn't eat H.E.R.
An under the counter love, so _Silent_-ly I _Treat_ H.E.R.
Her Daddy'll beat H.E.R., eyes all Puff-ed
In the mix on tape, niggaz had her in the buff
When we touch, it was more than just a fuck
The Police, in her I found peace (like who?)
Like Malcolm in the East
Seen H.E.R. on the streets of New York, trickin off
Tried to make a hit with H.E.R. but my dick went soft
Movin weight, losin weight, not picky - with who she choose to date
To confuse the hate, with her struggle I relate
Close to thirty, most of the niggaz she know is dirty
Havin more babies than Lauryn, she started showin early
As of late I realized, that this is H.E.R. fate
Or destiny that brings the best of me
It's like God is testin me
In _Retrospect_ I see she brought _Life_ and death to me
Peace to us collectively, live and direct when we perform
It's just coffee shop chicks and white dudes
Over H.E.R. I got into it with that nigga Ice Cube
Now the fight moved to in life, makin the right moves
Besides God and family, you my life's jewel
Like that y'all
Hip-Hop.. [echoes]

[whispered]
Take it to the top, what? Hip-Hop (hip-hip)
To the top, hip-hop (hip-hop) check it out

[Black Thought - louder]
It's like, word up, and it sounds nice
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life, what?
Bout to take you to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the, yo
Fifth Dynamite, and it sounds so nice
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life
I'm bout to take you to the top love
Hip-Hop, word up, to the top (to the top)
Hip-Hop, check it out
It's like that, what? And it sounds alright
Hey, cause you the love of my life
I'm bout to take you to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the, check it out
What? Yeah, and it sounds so nice
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life
Bout to take you to the top love
Hip-Hop (hip-hop) to the top (to the top) hip-hop (hip-hop)
Fifth Dynamite, and it sounds alright
Hey, cause you the love of my life
I'm bout to take you to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the
To the to the to the to the, check it out, yo
Ye-yeh-yo, yo, and it sounds so nice
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life
We bout to take you to the top love, hip-hop (hip-hop)
To the top (to the top) hip-hop (hip-hop)
Check it out, it's like, yeah, and it's sounds alright
Hip-Hop, you the love of my life
We bout, take it to the to the to the [vocals fade]

Langston Hughes

Online Sample to Vintage Classic's Collected Poems of Langston Hughes

( Click 'Look Inside') New and used copies  can be purchased through this link.

- best damn poet in human history.  Even if you don't like his poetry, you have to respect the body of work.  Did this man sleep!?!     Bright and sharp emotion, cool and clean writing.  His work spans his life-time.  He never stopped writing.  If you ever want to meet this man,  you don't need to go to any biography -- read the work, he's there.

Rilke

Rilke's website - a beautiful site that includes the German with the English translation; please see the article posted on the Words & Writing page re: Rilke and why women (some men, too, probably)  find him irresistible.  ;-)

RUMI

- I find him a little bossy sometimes.  His poetry is very instructional.  Some may say he's qualified, though.  Sometimes, I agree.  He's a juggernaut of passion and whether you believe in his philosophies or not, the poetry is beautiful.
