[undeclared
poster girl ... what a cutie]
This
is my proposal to promote Room to Read through this website.
I will first start with my motivations and then my plan:
In
the past year, I decided to become a more active contributor to world
issues. I was particularly inspired by the story of Van Nanth
(spelling?), the sole survivor of a detention centre during the Khmer
Rouge regime in Cambodia. His
story, told through his art, was very vivid.
I am a writer and website owner. The website came before
this decision to become more involved. My original purpose
with this website was to cultivate a voice for myself, as well as others,
in the mediums of dance, music and writing.
I
tried to get another survivor from the regime to let me publish his
poetry on my site. Since
then, I have made other considerations about this desire to become more
involved. Simply, I decided that survivors of war and strife do
not need or want my pity. If
I am to showcase any work, especially on an arts community website such
as mine, it will be because these people are artists, dancers, musicians or
writers. Any political,
religious or social ideas, advocated or denounced through this website
must be done through an art form or from discussion of an art piece.

My
plan is this, as these children are learning
to read, I wish to encourage their literary development by encouraging
them to write as well. I
would like very much to publish poetry, short stories or essays that come
from your literacy programs and from these children.
I want to know more about their lives, how they live, their
feelings – and not just about what they suffer but what they enjoy
and love.
My
site’s main purpose is to celebrate the arts and create community within
the arts. Each artist
showcased in my Café pages is given a full bio and allowed to publish
samples of their best work in dance, music or writing.
The artist can include a picture as well.
I would offer the same professional layout to your young readers,
and hopefully writers. Eventually,
I want these kids online for
one o' my workshops!
I
hope you will see some promise in this proposal and I look forward to
hearing from you.
Sincerely,
lyw
