HOW TO WRITE A BIO - for non-writers/artists

Books & Music Related Links Commentaries Search

For the non-writers who endeavour to write their own bios, below is a general questionnaire and some tips on how to write one:

The artist's bio should be as professional as a resume, with a little bit more personality and character.  Think of yourself in the third person and as a story that you are describing to somebody in one short paragraph.

The artist should cite the most critical pieces of education and work in the artist's career with actual dates and names.

The artist can use the below questionnaire to get a good third-person impression of his/her career and use this information to boil down into one strong paragraph.  This is a bare-bones bio questionnaire.

NAME:

WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED?

WHERE AND WHAT HAVE YOU STUDIED?

WHERE AND WHAT HAVE YOU PERFORMED? (IF APPLICABLE)

WHERE AND WHAT HAVE YOU TAUGHT? (IF APPLICABLE)

HOW DID YOU GET INTO DANCE/MUSIC? (WHERE WERE YOU? WHAT WERE YOU DOING? HOW OLD WERE YOU?)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY IN DANCE OR MUSIC?

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS DISTINCT ABOUT YOUR STYLE?

WHAT ASPECTS OF DANCE/MUSIC DO YOU LIKE THE MOST? THAT YOU DO BEST!

WHAT'S YOUR FAMILY LIKE? WHAT WAS YOUR UPBRINGING LIKE? ARE THERE OTHER DANCERS/MUSICIANS IN YOUR FAMILY?

WHAT IS YOUR BEST OVERALL QUALITY?

WHAT IS YOUR WORST OVERALL QUALITY?

WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO DO BESIDES DANCE/MUSIC?

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS IN DANCE/MUSIC?

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS IN LIFE?

QUOTE ON DANCE/MUSIC: IF YOU HAD ONE THING TO SAY ABOUT DANCE/MUSIC, FOR LOVE OR PHILOSOPHY OR LEARNING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? NO PRESSURE.
