I found Bruce Holland Rogers’
work through the Internet. Rogers’ is a writer
who chooses to live and write according to what
fits his needs as a writer. Lots of writers do
this but few manage to make it work for them.
Even fewer writers make their form of
publication as original as the fiction itself.

“I don’t know much about the short fiction market nowadays –
is there still a market?” responded writer
Chris Dreher.
The writers interviewed in this article offer a variety of
takes on the short’s condition but all
agree that shorts have the potential to grab a
bigger piece of the reading market if adapted
differently. The question becomes: is it not
better just the way it is?
The short in 2006 has reached a small, self-sustaining niche
market. At the bookstore level, the short
fiction market is mainly reserved for
well-established writers. The other short
market comes from the literary journals and
competitions where new and established writers
can exercise their craft among a peer-based
audience. Its history may be long and
varied but today the short fiction market is
mainly played by either the best or the least
known writers. [click the link for more]
This section of the Fish
Publishing website is aimed at providing
constructive and, hopefully, inspiring
information on writing short stories. We
will be relying on the wisdom of
acclaimed short story writers, some of
whom have judged the Fish Short Story
Contests.
Welcome to the fiction short
story section at east of the web. Find this month's featured stories above.
You can browse the fiction library by subgenre or search it for a title,
author or keyword. Clicking on an author's name lists all their stories
along with further information and links. Stories can be read online,
printed or downloaded for reading offline or on handheld devices.
Just
as eyes, art often provides a window to the soul. Story Bytes' very short
stories offer a glimpse through this window into brief vignettes of life,
often reflecting or revealing those things which make us human.
"I had been thinking of a web magazine for
sometime to bridge the gap between academia and
non-academic circles and 'Cerebration' took a perfect
shape after I approached Smita with the idea. Some day
we hope to have a printed version of it too, but for now
we are going to dwell on online mode. The love for
language and writing gave me the impetus to start
something like this and I do hope 'Cerebration' becomes
an exciting space for critical thought and creative
expression in cyber-space." AMRITA GHOSH

Storyteller is a general fiction magazine. Our readers especially enjoy
humour, adventure, mystery, drama, suspense, horror, SF and fantasy.
However, some genre stories can be too "hard core" for us, and are better
suited to a specialty magazine. We recommend you read an issue or two to get
a feel for what we publish.
Geist
is conceived as a Canadian magazine of ideas and culture. It has a strong
literary focus and a sense of humour; the Geist tone is intelligent,
plain-talking, inclusive and offbeat. Each issue of the magazine is a
strangely convergent collection of fiction, non-fiction, photographs, comix,
reviews, little-known facts of interest, a bit of poetry and the legendary
Geist crossword puzzle, all of which explore the lines between fiction and
non-fiction, and which take a new look at the imaginary country we all
inhabit from time to time, which often has something to do with Canada.
Grain has grown up with a
generation of literary magazines, and is proud to be alive and flourishing
after more than 30 years of life. This flourish is due to the readers, and
contributors, but also to primary funding sponsors: Saskatchewan Writers
Guild (publisher-in-chief), Sask Lotteries, Saskatchewan Arts Board, The
Canada Council and The Canada Magazine Fund.

Visual Arts published twice a year in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
"OV is currently seeking

Canada's longest living literary journal, The Fiddlehead is published four
times a year at the University of New Brunswick, with the generous
assistance of the University of New Brunswick, The Canada Council for the
Arts, and the Province of New Brunswick.
First published in 1945, The Fiddlehead is known as a WHO'S WHO in Can. Lit.
Many - now well-known - writers have found their first home in our pages,
and they, as well as some of our editors and assistants, go on to win awards
and prizes across the country.
Do not look at this journal as old! It is experienced; wise enough to
recognize excellence; always looking for freshness and surprise.
Room of One's Own was founded in 1975 by a group of women who wanted to
provide an opportunity to showcase the work of emerging writers with that of
established writers. For a time, Room of One's Own was the only Canadian
literary journal for women writers.
The West Coast Feminist Literary Magazine publishing Society was created
from this idea, and continues to operate as the Growing Room Collective, a
volunteer group that publishes Room of One's Own. Former collective members
have included award-winning author Gayla Reid, CBC broadcaster Eleanor
Wachtel, and UBC press editor Jean Wilson.
The Malahat
Review, established in 1967, is among Canada’s leading literary journals. Published quarterly, the journal presents international and contemporary works of poetry and fiction, and reviews of new publications by Canadian authors.
Dedicated to excellence in writing, our aim is to discover promising new writers and publish their work alongside that of the best established writers, to present work accurately and attractively to readers, and to increase awareness of Canadian writing in general.
PRISM international is a quarterly
magazine out of Vancouver, British Columbia, whose mandate is to publish the
best in contemporary writing and translation from Canada and around the world.
Started in 1959, PRISM is the oldest literary magazine in Western Canada.

Event is a literary magazine in its 34th year of publication which
focuses on fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, notes on writing and
reviews. Our contributors include both established and unknown writers.
We deliberately seek the writer who is writing well but possibly not yet
well-known, and look for writing that inspires access to the reader's
imagination. We have no particular theory to grind, so we aim for
diversity, excellence in expression and intensity of experience.
Since 1997 Ascent Aspirations has grown from a small
electronic magazine that publishes literary, science fiction, fantasy,
horror and dark mainstream short fiction and poetry, essays and visual
art into a major presence on the web and is now becoming a print
magazine for two issues a year.
Mission Statement
Ascent Aspirations Publishing has a mission to publish
aspiring writers of poetry and short fiction in the form of independent
collections and anthologies. We are interested in promoting writers
through posting book titles and web page links. We want to help create a
connected web of writers and writer groups that helps to promote poetry
and short fiction and other written forms locally and globally.
Tucked in that luxurious word decadence is something
sinister, something eating away at a general notion of frothy beverages by
pool sides, jewel-encrusted fingers made fat from overindulgence. But this
is a lovely, multi-layered word. One that also means a process of decay in a
society, especially of morals. How fitting, then, that at the heart of
decadence is decay ...
PEN Canada works on behalf of writers, at home and

again.

People
of the Caribbean are natural-born storytellers. They spend time with their
ancestry; they tell stories of their past. These rich and diverse histories are
often scattered, as we migrate from place to place, as our diasporic journeys
remain undocumented.
CaribbeanTales.org (not for profit)
is a new, interactive, audio-visual meeting and recording place, a space to
gather our stories on the internet as a living popular history.
Nthposition The name nthposition was chosen after discovering that the deeply
meaningful names were taken. A Google search revealed that
nthposition is "significant to floating point types" and "all
elements in front of the nth position are less than or equal to this
element, and all elements that follow are greater than or equal to
it". So we're no better or worse than any other site, and we have no
particular editorial policy apart from a strong preference for good,
interesting writing.
The
100 poets
series of poetry anthologies - available for free download from the
site - was described by the 'Guardian' as "remarkable for its global
range and depth", by the London 'Times' as "one of the best examples
of how the internet has been used to champion a cause" and by
'Private Eye' as "genuinely innovative".
"It offends
my intelligence that a man can master the Devil without
being able to master the Portuguese language." Life wasn't
easy for the angst-ridden poet and occultist...
The Dublin Writers Workshop

Acorn. During the 1980s and 1990s, it was housed in a number of pubs, finishing up its regular meetings in the upstairs room of Bowes Pub on Fleet Street.
